Lake Ridge High School Colorguard 2021 Clinic/Audition

Monday, April 12th-Thursday, April 15th, 2021, 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM
Lake Ridge High School Band Hall

No Previous Experience Required. All audition materials are taught during the clinic.
Open to all incoming 2021 freshmen and current high school students.

What is Colorguard? Colorguard is a full-year commitment. Our members begin a training schedule from April through July learning skills of equipment and dance technique. Starting in August through October, the Colorguard joins the Lake Ridge High School Marching Band to learn a competitive field show performed during marching contests and varsity football games. During the second semester, students audition for Winterguard where the performers are placed into either a JV or Varsity level. Winterguard focuses on the staging and theatrical elements of the Lake Ridge Guard. Both the JV and Varsity are taken to competitions for evaluation on movement, equipment and performance. Colorguard students may earn a PE or Fine Arts credit.

What to expect during the clinic and audition day:

  1. Flag Audition: Students will learn a breakdown of basic equipment skills that are used as a foundation of our technique. Students will learn a flag piece to be performed on the final day of auditions. No previous equipment experience is needed prior to audition week. Demonstration of performance achievement is evaluated and ongoing.
  2. Dance Audition: Students will stretch and learn a breakdown of basic movement skills that are used as a foundation of our dance technique. Students will learn a dance piece to be performed on the final day of auditions. No previous dance experience is needed prior to auditioning. Growth throughout the clinic week is evaluated and ongoing.
  3. Presentation of the performer: Colorguard candidates should be groomed in proper audition attire including solid blacks, meaning a black top and bottom (small logos on clothing is accepted) hair pulled out of the face and makeup is encouraged but not required on the final audition day, April 15th. During the clinic week, students should wear clothes that are comfortable but avoid anything that would compromise movement. Shoes will not be worn during the clinic or audition day to encourage longer movement lines. Performers should not wear crop tops, jeans or distracting jewelry. Ladies, if you plan to wear shorts or spanx, plan to wear black or nude tights underneath. Men, if you have shorts that cover the top of your knees, leggings are not required underneath your shorts. Veteran members need to wear Colorguard gloves of any color. Masks are required at all times. Please plan to bring plenty of water.
  4. Will I audition alone? No student will be asked to audition alone. Auditions are performed in small groups and closed from the public. You will be evaluated on processing application of information received from the Director and veteran members, range of movement and equipment skills, and most importantly, your demonstration of a positive attitude and good work ethic.
